What are my chances of having an accident while backing up my car?
Every year in this country, over 300,000 reversing accidents are reported. They occur in driveways, parking lots, on streets, and in neighborhoods all over the U.S. More than 400 people a year are killed by cars backing up, most of them young children. The cost to drivers each year is over 1.3 billion dollars, and the Dept. of Transportation reports that 27% of all accidents occur when backing up. Research has shown that 70% of reversing accidents could be prevented by a back up camera or parking sensor car safety system.
|
What obstacles can the vehicle safety systems detect?
Our back up cameras and parking sensors can detect any object behind your car: toys, small children, animals, or anything else large enough to necessitate stopping your car. The car safety system will notify you of the danger with beeping and an LCD display inside your car, allowing you to stop in time to prevent an accident.
|
How do your parking sensor systems work?
When you put your car into reverse, the system powers on and begins detecting objects behind your car. The closer you get to an object the more frequently the system beeps, and the display shows how close you are to the object. When you shift into drive, the whole system is deactivated.
|
Is the accident avoidance system a drain on the battery?
Absolutely not, because the controller and sensors are only activated when you put the car into reverse gear, which is the only time they are needed. When your car is in drive, or your ignition is off, there is no power going from the battery to the vehicle safety system.

What is a Parking Sensor System?
Our parking sensors are driving safety devices that you can add to any car, truck, van, RV, SUV, or commercial truck. These devices use ultrasonic energy to sense obstacles behind your car. They are also called backup sensors or reverse sensors.
|
How do your parking sensors work?
Our backing safety systems have 2-8 (or more) parking sensors, a controller unit, and as speaker or display. The backup sensors can be installed in different ways and locations to sense objects or people behind your car. They send out ultrasonic energy waves at a frequency of 4 times a second, and if waves are detected bouncing back off of an object, the system sounds the audible alarm and/or displays the distance to the object.

Why should everyone have a reverse backing system?
Yearly, over 300,000 reversing accidents are reported in the U.S. (That does not include the hundreds of thousands of accidents that go unreported each year.) The U.S. Dept. of Transportation reports that close to 1/3 (27%) of all accidents involve reversing. Reversing accidents cost insurance companies and the U.S. public over 1.3 billion dollars a year. Kidsandcars.org reports that reversing accidents increased 57% from 2006 to 2007. In 2007, 91 children were killed in backup accidents, and 82% of those children were under age four. According to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, 70% of all reversing accidents could have been avoided if a backing safety system had been installed.

How are the parking sensors installed?
At Reverse Backing Systems, we have three different recommended installation options, depending on your situation and car safety system:
Option 1: Typical Installation
Typically, four holes are drilled in your bumper with the drill bit provided, and the parking sensors are attached to the holes. Then, the sensors are plugged into the controller unit, the controller is installed in a waterproof area of your car, such as in the trunk. The controller is power-wired to your reverse gear lights on the back of the car, and the output device wire is run from the controller unit to your speaker or LCD display. You or your local car stereo shop or Best Buy can easily perform this installation.
Option 2: License Plate Installation
The next option is even simpler than the typical installation. You can buy as license plate frame with the sensors pre-installed on it. This makes your system easy to un-install, and doesn't put holes in your bumper. Everything is the same as the above installation, except that the sensors are mounted on the license plate frame, not on your bumper.
Option 3: Truck Installation
The third option is just for trucks, since many of them have steel bumpers that would make the drilling difficult. For trucks, we provide brackets to install on the bottom of the bumper for mounting the parking sensors. The rest of the installation is the same as the previous two options. Refer to our Installation section for more details on truck installation.

How much will the backup camera or parking sensor car safety system installation cost?
If you choose to install the system yourself, we include everything all parts needed to install the car safety system, including instructions. However, if you choose to have it installed for you, almost any place that installs car stereos can do the job. We will even find an installer and schedule the appointment for you! When you select your car safety system, simply select "Find Installer" to start the process.

How does the car reversing sensor turn on?
Because the power for the auto safety system comes from your parking lights, the system has power only when your car is in reverse gear. When you shift your car into drive, the system powers off.
|
How do the parking sensors compare to the backup cameras?
Back-up cameras are a great way to increase your driving safety, and we highly recommend them, if you can afford that option. However, it wouldn't be as effective to use only a backup camera, and no parking sensors. That's because most reversing accidents happen when the driver gets distracted, or isn't paying attention. So, with a parking sensor you have an automatic reminder that there is something obstructing your car, in case you get distracted one time and forget to check your mirror or camera. The best use of the camera is to verify what is behind your car after the sensor picks up on the danger and alerts you.
